The Bollywood world is in mourning as it bids farewell to the legendary Kamini Kaushal. The veteran actress, who graced the silver screen for over seven decades, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 98. Her legacy, however, will continue to shine brightly.
Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani, who shared the screen with her in the film Kabir Singh, were among the first to express their grief. Kiara Advani took to Instagram, sharing a touching tribute: "It was an honour to work with you. Your grace, humility and talent inspired generations and left an unforgettable mark on Indian cinema. Rest in peace, Kamini Kaushal Ji." Shahid Kapoor also paid his respects, writing, "Rest in light ma'am." Kareena Kapoor also joined in, sharing a picture of Kamini on Instagram with heartfelt emojis.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, where opinions might differ: Kamini Kaushal wasn't just any actress; she was a pioneer. Her career began in 1946 with Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar, which remarkably won the Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) at the Cannes Film Festival. She quickly rose to fame, becoming one of the highest-paid actresses of the late 1940s with hits like Aag, Shaheed, Nadiya Ke Paar, and Ziddi.
And this is the part most people miss... she worked alongside some of Bollywood's biggest stars, including Raaj Kumar, Dev Anand, and Dilip Kumar. Her filmography is a testament to her versatility, spanning across genres and generations, including films like Do Raaste, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Heer Raanjha, Beti, Waaris, Chennai Express, and Kabir Singh. Her final appearance was a cameo in Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chadha.
Kamini Kaushal's close associate, Sajan Narain, confirmed her passing, stating that she died at her Mumbai home. She would have turned 99 in February. The cause of her death has not been revealed, and her sons, Shravan, Vidur, and Rahul Sood, have yet to release an official statement.
