The Asian tiger mosquito, an invasive species, is moving northwards as temperatures rise, and it's only a matter of time before this disease expands further. A recent study has revealed a shocking difference in the minimum temperature required for virus transmission, indicating that the disease could spread for more than six months in southern European countries and even two months in southeast England.
But here's where it gets controversial: the study suggests that the risk of chikungunya outbreaks is higher and more widespread than previously thought. With a cut-off temperature of 13-14°C, infections can occur for a significant portion of the year in many European countries.

The study also highlights the importance of understanding the incubation period of the virus in mosquitoes. If this period is longer than the mosquito's lifespan, the virus cannot spread. However, with the changing climate, the incubation time and mosquito activity are shifting, leading to potential amplification of chikungunya outbreaks in Europe.
While there have been no local transmissions in the UK yet, the number of cases among travelers returning from abroad is rising, with a record-breaking 73 cases reported between January and June 2025.
