Dhurandhar Controversy: Bollywood Film Mutes 'Baloch' After Backlash (2026)

The Indian film industry faced a unique challenge when the makers of 'Dhurandhar' decided to censor a controversial line after facing backlash from the Baloch community. The film, a period spy thriller, had to revise some dialogue and mute the word 'Baloch' following objections over a line that was widely criticized as hate speech. This decision came as a result of pressure from the Baloch community and directives issued by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The line in question, spoken by Sanjay Dutt, was: "Magarmachh pe bharosa kar sakte hai, par Baloch pe nahi (You can trust a crocodile, but not a Baloch)." This statement sparked protests in Junagadh by the Baloch Makrani community, who felt it damaged their reputation. Ejaz Makrani, president of the Junagadh Baloch Makrani Society, took legal action, filing an application at the police station and warning of further legal steps if appropriate action was not taken.

Another lawyer, Nabil Baloch, issued a legal notice to the director and actor, accusing them of defaming the community. The notice demanded a public apology and censorship of the film, stating that the use of vulgar and abusive language against a community constitutes hate-oriented speech and promotes social disharmony. The makers of the film were called upon to remove all defamatory references to the Baloch community from the film, including trailers and online content.

In court, Justice A P Mayee asked the petitioners to substantiate how the dialogue defamed the Baloch community. Despite the revisions, the film's commercial success continues, generating approximately INR 7.4 billion in just 29 days, surpassing the previous record-holder 'Chhaava', which was also criticized for its portrayal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and fueling unrest in Nagpur. This success highlights the ongoing debate about the balance between artistic expression and cultural sensitivity in the Bollywood ecosystem.
