Massive Snowstorm Hits Northern US: 1,500 Flights Canceled and Travel Chaos Ensues! (2026)

Severe travel disruptions have hit the northern regions of the United States due to significant snowfall, and the implications are affecting many holiday travelers.

In a nutshell, the heavy snow has led to the cancellation of at least 1,500 flights nationwide, with some areas experiencing snowfall amounts reaching as much as 25 centimeters.

So, what’s the latest update? A state of emergency has been officially declared in both New York and New Jersey, prompting officials to strongly advise residents against traveling under these hazardous snowy conditions.

During this busy travel season, which stretches from Christmas through New Year’s, more than 1,000 flights have either been cancelled or delayed across the Northeast and Great Lakes regions. New York City, for instance, received approximately 10 centimeters of snow from Friday night into early Saturday morning, local time.

According to FlightAware, a flight-tracking service, these cancellations began stacking up from Friday evening. However, by Saturday morning, both roadways and air traffic were gradually returning to normal. "The storm is definitely winding down, with just a few flurries still lingering across the Northeast this morning," noted Bob Oravec, a forecaster at the National Weather Service based in Maryland.

Oravec explained that the storm is moving from the northwest towards the southeast, with the heaviest snowfall in the New York City region recorded at over 15 centimeters in central eastern Long Island. In the Catskills area, some communities reported snowfall totals reaching as high as 25 centimeters.

Major airports such as Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, and LaGuardia issued snow warnings via their social media accounts on Friday, cautioning passengers about potential flight disruptions caused by the inclement weather.

In an unexpected turn of events, workers clad in red jumpsuits were seen in Times Square clearing away the slushy snow from the streets and sidewalks with shovels and snow blowers.

Jennifer Yokley, who was visiting from North Carolina, shared her delight in witnessing the snow accumulate beautifully on buildings, trees, and signs throughout the bustling city. "I think it was absolutely beautiful," she expressed with enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, Payton Baker and Kolby Gray, celebrating their third anniversary with a trip from West Virginia, described the snowfall as a delightful surprise for their holiday visit. "It’s very cold, and honestly, we didn’t expect this at all," Baker remarked. "The city is doing a pretty good job managing the situation, salting the roads and everything, so it's manageable."

Before the storm’s arrival, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for more than half of the state, while Acting New Jersey Governor Tahesha Way followed suit, issuing a similar declaration for New Jersey.

"This storm will create dangerous road conditions and significantly impact holiday travel," Way stated in an official announcement. "We urge travelers to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm to allow road crews the space they need to work effectively."
