Facing relentless online criticism and mobility issues, a Member of Parliament has shed nearly **10 stone thanks to a weight-loss drug. But she's now issuing a stark warning: unregulated weight-loss injections are akin to a dangerous game of chance.**
Carolyn Harris, the Labour MP for Neath and Swansea East, shared her journey, revealing how she went from a size 24 to a size 10 after taking Mounjaro in October 2024. Her decision was driven by both health concerns and the constant barrage of negative comments about her appearance from online trolls. She emphasizes that she sought the drug through regulated medical channels, consulting her GP to ensure all necessary health checks were conducted.
Her motivation was deeply personal. Harris struggled with mobility, finding it difficult to walk around her constituency. This issue came to a head during a walk around a lake in Swansea, where she had to stop a quarter of the way in. Additionally, the MP was tired of the cruel comments she received online. "How I looked or what I was wearing had become more important than my politics," the 65-year-old told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.
But here's where it gets controversial... Harris is now cautioning others about the risks associated with obtaining weight-loss drugs through unregulated sources. The National Pharmacy Association has raised concerns about the surge in demand for drugs like Mounjaro and Ozempic, with people increasingly turning to beauty salons or social media to obtain them.
In England, anyone prescribing weight-loss injections must be registered with the Care Quality Commission. However, in Wales, only doctors are required to register with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW). This means other healthcare professionals aren't legally held to the same standards or routinely inspected.
"The people who elect to get these drugs from unlicensed places are playing Russian roulette with their lives," Harris stated, highlighting the potential dangers of unknown substances. "They don't know what they might be injecting into themselves, and that terrifies me."
The Welsh government acknowledges the considerable demand for weight management medicines and the growing pressure for access through the NHS. They are working on a new model to address this demand sustainably, considering access across various settings and support systems to help sustain weight loss. They have also implemented new arrangements for those with the most urgent clinical needs to access these medicines while broader access plans are developed.
