Get ready for some major changes at the Oakridge-41st Avenue SkyTrain station! A construction project that's been causing nightly early closures is about to enter a new phase, and it's going to impact commuters for a bit longer than expected.
The previous round of early closures, which began in December 2025, is set to end soon, but here's the catch: another round of nightly disruptions is scheduled to start in late January 2026, and this time, it's expected to last for about two months!
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, a little confusing. These early closures are necessary to support the station's major expansion, which includes some exciting upgrades. Think two new escalators from street level, a relocated elevator, and a brand-new secondary entrance that will provide a direct connection from the upcoming Oakridge Park indoor mall to an expanded ticketing area. It's like a transportation hub in the making!
And this is the part most people miss: the street-level entrance will get an expanded roof for better weather protection, and even the bus stop will be upgraded with weather shields, an info display, and benches. It's all about making your commute more comfortable and efficient.
Starting on January 26, the next phase of early closures will begin at 11 p.m. on Sunday to Thursday nights. No early closures are planned for the weekends or Family Day, so at least there's some relief there.
Over the next two months, construction crews will be busy demolishing the original 2009 station entrance and installing large glass panels on the newly built timber roof structure. It's a complex process, but the end result will be a brighter, more spacious station entrance.
Additionally, the existing elevator will be closed for three months, from January 26 to April 30. So, if you rely on the elevator, it's important to plan your commute accordingly.
The entire station expansion project is expected to wrap up in the summer of 2026, but weather conditions could impact the timeline. Construction began back in September 2024, and it was initially estimated to take about a year, so we're already a bit behind schedule.
The mall developer, QuadReal Property Group, is funding a significant portion of these upgrades to prepare the station for the increased passenger volumes that Oakridge Park will generate. With its high concentration of retail, dining, residential, and office spaces, plus major civic facilities like a rooftop park and a large recreational center, it's no surprise that the station needs an upgrade to handle the expected demand.
The station expansion will also cater to the future high-density developments in the broader Oakridge Municipal Town Centre area, so it's a long-term investment in the community's infrastructure.
The goal is to have the station upgrades completed as close as possible to the mall's opening date, which is expected in the spring of 2026. The first and largest phase of the Oakridge Park mall project is already in its final stages of completion, with other components like the community center and new housing expected to follow later in the year.
So, while these early closures might be a temporary inconvenience, the end result will be a more modern, efficient, and comfortable SkyTrain station that better serves the needs of the community. It's all part of the growing pains of a thriving neighborhood!
