A brewing storm is threatening to disrupt the governance of Ondo State, as accusations of deliberate obstruction within the House of Assembly surface. Speaker Olamide Oladiji alleges that certain lawmakers are actively working to undermine Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa's administration, potentially hindering the delivery of essential services to the people.
This internal conflict, despite all 26 members belonging to the same political party, the All Progressives Congress, has created a significant rift. The Assembly is now split, with 14 lawmakers reportedly supporting the Speaker and actively participating in legislative duties, while 12 others have withdrawn, citing unresolved grievances.
Reports circulating on social media suggest that the dissenting lawmakers have initiated moves to change the Assembly's leadership, including removing the Speaker. They allegedly passed a vote of no confidence in him, citing allegations of gross misconduct.
Speaking to journalists in Akure, Speaker Oladiji accused the dissenting lawmakers of intentionally destabilizing government operations. He emphasized that he has been running the Assembly in accordance with its established Rules and Standing Orders.
He stated, "These honorable members who claim to have passed a vote of no confidence in me have not been attending sittings. As I speak, the majority of them are outside the country." He further explained that their demands were tied to legislative assignments, such as the supplementary or re-ordered budget. However, the Speaker and the 14 supporting lawmakers believe that such demands should not be used to frustrate government activities.
The Assembly proceeded with the reordering of the budget at its last plenary, with the Speaker maintaining the support of Governor Aiyedatiwa. "We are strongly together, and we have the backing of His Excellency because what we are doing is in the interest of the state," he affirmed. He appealed to the aggrieved legislators to return to the chamber and fulfill their constitutional duties.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Olatunji Oshati, has dismissed reports of an internal leadership crisis and any plans to impeach the Speaker, stating that the House remains united.
And this is the part most people miss... The situation raises questions about the stability of the state's governance and the potential impact on its citizens. Is this a genuine disagreement over policy, or are there other underlying factors at play?
