Putin's Power in Peril? Russia's Military & Business Elites Plotting a Coup? (2026)

A potential coup against Vladimir Putin looms as Russia's desperate and unstable situation intensifies. The future of Putin's rule is at stake, with a lethal alliance of military and business forces on the horizon.

The former head of Poland's Foreign Intelligence Services, Piotr Krawczyk, warns that Russia is facing a dire economic crisis due to its prolonged war efforts. Despite billions of dollars in government investment, the defense sector is struggling with labor shortages, cash flow issues, and a lack of critical weapon components. Recent US sanctions on Lukoil and Rosneft have further exacerbated Russia's financial woes, causing a dramatic drop in oil prices.

Putin's reliance on oil and gas sales to fund his war in Ukraine is now a critical vulnerability. His military, meanwhile, continues to face significant challenges on the battlefield, suffering heavy casualties with little to show for it.

Krawczyk, a former colonel in the Polish Foreign Intelligence Services, believes Putin is facing a deteriorating situation in Russia that could ultimately threaten his power. "The Russians are in a desperate situation," he says. "They're not gaining ground in Ukraine, and they're losing economically, as well as markets, friends, and partners."

The US sanctions have had a profound impact, forcing Lukoil and Rosneft to sell off billions in assets and causing a collapse in oil prices. "The situation for Russia is dramatic," Krawczyk explains. "Their oil is being sold at a significant discount, which is putting a strain on their budget."

Russia's 2025 budget assumes an average export price of $70 per barrel of crude oil, but with the current discount, they're selling it for around $35. This growing fiscal debt, coupled with military setbacks, threatens to divide Russia's ruling elites and potentially challenge Putin's reign.

"This is an extremely unstable situation," Krawczyk warns. "The security services see Russia's sovereignty threatened by the war, while businesses, initially profiting, are now losing money due to sanctions."

While a revolution akin to 1917 may not be imminent, Krawczyk identifies the military and big business as potential power players in the not-too-distant future. "The usual suspects are the army services and the security apparatus, along with big business."

The stage is set for a potential power shift in Russia, and the world watches with bated breath. But here's where it gets controversial: Could Putin's rule be coming to an end? And if so, what does this mean for the future of Russia and the world? What are your thoughts on this potential coup? Share your opinions in the comments below!
