Winter's Wrath: York Braces for Snow and Ice
As the Met Office issues a fresh snow and ice warning, York and North Yorkshire residents are on high alert. While Storm Goretti may have spared our region from its full fury, the forecast predicts a wintry 36 hours ahead.
The yellow warning, stretching across northern England and Scotland, takes effect from midday today (Friday, 9 January) until 3 pm tomorrow. The Met Office warns of wintry showers and snow accumulations, with ice posing a widespread risk and potential disruptions to travel.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Despite the storm's impact elsewhere, North Yorkshire has remained relatively unscathed so far. However, rail companies are taking no chances, closely monitoring the situation and issuing travel advisories.
LNER, a major rail operator, advises passengers to thoroughly check their journeys on the affected days. They emphasize that there are currently no timetable changes due to Storm Goretti today, but offer flexibility for those impacted by other train operators' advisories. If you have a connecting LNER service, your original ticket is valid up to and including Monday, 12 January 2026.
Additionally, refunds are available for those who chose not to travel yesterday or today.
And this is the part most people miss...
While the snow warning may cause inconvenience, it's a reminder of the importance of staying informed and prepared during winter weather. Checking travel updates and allowing for potential delays can make a significant difference in ensuring a safe and stress-free journey.
So, York residents, stay warm, stay informed, and remember to check those travel plans before braving the wintery elements!
