The extra point put Chicago ahead 7-0. To add insult to injury, the ensuing kickoff saw Kenneth Gainwell fumble, getting tackled all the way back at the Steelers' own five-yard line. Talk about a disastrous start!
Despite the early adversity, the Steelers' offense started to find its rhythm. A 21-yard completion to Ben Skowronek and a 13-yard catch-and-run by Gainwell moved them into scoring position. DK Metcalf then hauled in a six-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 as the first quarter drew to a close.
The second quarter brought even more excitement. T.J. Watt, in pursuit of Williams, forced a fumble in the end zone. Nick Herbig pounced on the loose ball, giving the Steelers a defensive touchdown and a 14-7 lead. But the turnover frenzy wasn't over yet. The Bears fumbled again, with Yahya Black stripping the ball in a pile. And this is the part most people miss... even with all those turnovers, the Steelers failed to truly dominate.
Instead, a failed fourth-down conversion gave the Bears life. Williams connected with Burden for 15 yards and Rome Odunze for 23, setting up a 12-yard touchdown pass to Colston Loveland. The game was tied again at 14-14.
Then came a moment of brilliance – a fake tush push on 4th-and-1. Connor Heyward took the snap and handed it to Gainwell, who burst through the line for a 55-yard gain to the one-yard line! Jaylen Warren punched it in on the next play, giving the Steelers a 21-14 lead. The Bears, however, managed to drive into field goal range before halftime, with Cairo Santos connecting on a 47-yarder to cut the Steelers' lead to 21-17.
The second half started with a Steelers punt, which was then re-punted after a penalty. The Bears capitalized on the better field position, with Williams throwing all over the Steelers' defense, culminating in a 25-yard touchdown pass to Moore. The Bears now led 24-21.
The Steelers then had a critical fumble by Rudolph, recovered by Montez Sweat, which led to the Bears extending their lead to 31-21 on a Kyle Monangai two-yard touchdown run.
The Steelers fought back! Rudolph connected with Pat Freiermuth for a three-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 31-28. The defense forced a three-and-out, giving the Steelers the ball back with just over four minutes remaining.
Rudolph had a huge third-down run nullified by an illegal formation penalty. After a punt with 2:01 left, the Bears threw an incomplete pass on 3rd-and-7, stopping the clock. The Steelers got the ball back with 1:29 left, but ultimately failed to convert on fourth down. Chicago held on for the 31-28 victory.
