Prepare to be inspired! The University of Lancashire is set to illuminate the potential of 3D printing at an engaging event tailored for manufacturers eager to harness the benefits of additive manufacturing in their operations.
On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the Made Smarter initiative will host "Made Smarter – Discovering Additive Manufacturing" at the Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC) in Preston, where cutting-edge academic research meets the practical world of manufacturing. This half-day gathering aims to provide a hands-on introduction to additive manufacturing, commonly referred to as 3D printing. Attendees will discover how this innovative technology is currently being employed to enhance production efficiency, minimize waste, reduce operational costs, and explore new design possibilities within the manufacturing sector.
The event's agenda is thoughtfully crafted, blending compelling real-world case studies, insights from industry experts, and interactive demonstrations. This format allows manufacturers to witness additive manufacturing firsthand, engage in discussions, and consider how this technology might contribute to their own digital transformation journeys.
As part of the broader Made Smarter initiative, which fosters a peer-to-peer Digital Champions Network, this event offers a unique opportunity for manufacturers across various stages of digital adoption to learn from one another and build confidence in leveraging new technologies.
Additive manufacturing is radically changing the landscape of product design and production, paving the way for rapid prototyping, customization, and the manufacture of intricate components—all while decreasing material waste and shortening lead times. A recent report from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) reveals a significant trend, identifying the North West region as a burgeoning hub for the adoption of 3D printing technologies.
Supported by the government-backed Made Smarter North West program, this transformation has been substantial. Since its inception in 2019, the initiative has aided 27 manufacturers in investing a total of £1.6 million in 3D printing technologies, supplemented by £442,000 in grant funding. These investments are projected to create 128 new jobs, upskill 117 existing roles, and contribute an impressive £15.6 million to the local economy in terms of Gross Value Added (GVA).
Claire Scott, a technology adoption specialist with Made Smarter, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, "Our aim is to demystify additive manufacturing. It is no longer just a concept waiting to be realized; it has become an effective tool that empowers manufacturers of all sizes to operate more efficiently, quickly, and sustainably. If you’re curious about 3D printing and what it could translate to for your business, this event is a fantastic chance to observe it in action and receive candid answers to your inquiries."
Attendees will also hear compelling stories of digital transformation from industry insiders like Steven Allen and Siddique Rasul of Darwen Terracotta, an architectural terracotta manufacturer based in Blackburn. With support from Made Smarter, Darwen Terracotta explored opportunities in 3D scanning, robotics, and additive manufacturing, resulting in significant investments in 3D scanning technology, the establishment of robotic milling capabilities, and practical testing of 3D printing applications.
Moreover, participants can look forward to insights from Jonathan Rowley, the creator of Additive Companion—a free, resourceful platform designed to simplify the complexities of additive manufacturing and guide businesses through the myriad of 3D printing technologies, suppliers, and applications available.
To wrap up the event, attendees will enjoy a guided tour of the EIC, led by Bev Wood, who oversees Business Engagement at the Research and Knowledge Exchange Service at the University of Lancashire. This state-of-the-art £35 million facility houses specialized laboratories focused on additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, composites, intelligent systems, aerospace, and high-performance computing. It is committed to collaborating with industry partners to transform research into tangible applications.
Bev Wood expressed pride in hosting this event, saying, "The University of Lancashire is thrilled to welcome this Made Smarter event to our Engineering Innovation Centre. We closely collaborate with manufacturers throughout the North West to support their ambitions for digital transformation. This event represents a wonderful opportunity to connect regional businesses with expertise, facilities, and real-life examples of additive manufacturing in practice."
Alongside informative presentations and the guided tour, attendees will have ample chance to network with fellow manufacturers, Made Smarter advisors, and digital champions, fostering connections that could lead to further support and collaboration through the program.
