Unveiling Oxfordshire's Oak Sculpture: A County Flower Masterpiece (2025)

Get ready for an exciting artistic journey! A unique oak sculpture, depicting Oxfordshire's county flower, is almost ready to unveil its beauty.

Natasha Houseago, our talented artist-in-residence in Ducklington, has been hard at work. She shared, "I've been dedicating one or two days each week to this incredible ancient oak." The result? A stunning depiction of the rare snake's head fritillary, Oxfordshire's county flower, which will be fully unveiled this Saturday in the village.

But here's where it gets controversial... This sculpture is just one piece of a larger trail commissioned by the local parish council, set to open next year. Ms. Houseago, primarily a hand carver, has taken her time with this project, and the process has been a delightful experience for her. She's even gotten to know the locals while carving away!

The sculpture itself is a masterpiece. Created from a local oak that fell during a storm, it's been carefully carved into the distinctive shape of the county flower. Ms. Houseago explained, "I studied fritillaries in great detail, and their perfection in form and symbolism captivated me." She added, "The fritillary is a symbol of peace and resilience, making it especially meaningful in these challenging times."

And this is the part most people miss... The sculpture also features swans and a small hole where clay insects, crafted by local children, will be hidden. Ms. Houseago described this element as "a magical process" that will bring the carving to life.

The sculpture will be completed during an event at Bartholomew Park in Ducklington on Saturday. It's a must-see for art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike!
