The Holiday Season Behind Bars: A Unique Perspective
Imagine spending Christmas in prison, away from your loved ones. This year, prisoners in New Zealand will take charge of their festive feast, a rare opportunity to create special moments.
Leigh Marsh, Commissioner of Custodial Services, explains, "Under our watchful eye, prisoners gain practical skills in food preparation."
Christmas Lunch: A Traditional Spread
The menu remains unchanged: roast chicken, gravy, potatoes, peas, and carrots. Vegetarians can opt for lasagne.
For dinner, prisoners choose between roast beef sandwiches, relish salad, or tuna mayo salad. Vegetarians can enjoy falafel and coleslaw or egg mayo with salad.
Dessert Delight: Mince Pies
Two mince pies will be served as a sweet treat, adding $1.30 to the usual daily food budget of $9.80 per prisoner.
A Tough Time, But Opportunities to Connect
While Christmas Day follows the regular prison schedule, family days are organized for children to visit and enjoy festive activities.
Giving Back: Prisoners' Community Contribution
Inmates have the chance to give back during the holidays. Over 400 prisoner-made goods, including quilts, knitted clothing, and soft toys, will be donated to families and children in need.
These items were crafted throughout the year as part of a partnership between the Auckland Regional Women's Correctional Facility and NZ Howard League volunteers.
Building Purpose and Confidence
"These programs instill a sense of purpose, pride, and confidence, crucial for positive change," Marsh emphasizes.
Staff Support: A Giving Spirit
Corrections staff also embrace the spirit of giving, volunteering at food banks and charities for families in need.
A Special Thank You to Staff
"Our dedicated staff keep Corrections running around the clock. Even on Christmas Day, they ensure public safety. I'm grateful for their commitment," Marsh concludes.
Controversy and Comment:
